Mark Ball was appointed as Artistic Director and Chief Executive of LIFT in April 2009. Prior to his appointment at LIFT, Mark established Fierce Earth (now known as Creative Shift) in 1997 here in Birmingham. From 1998 – 2007 he was the founder Artistic Director of Fierce! (originally Queerfest), an annual international festival of theatre, live art and contemporary dance taking place across the West Midlands, now widely recognised as one of the UK’s most vibrant contemporary festivals.

In January 2008 he was appointed Head of Events and Exhibitions at the Royal Shakespeare Company, leading a new department responsible for developing the profile of the RSC amongst new audiences by producing and delivering a range of high profile artist-led projects and commissions.

In November 2005, Mark was named the Institute of Director’s (IoD) Young Director of the Year and was made a Clore Fellow in 2006/2007. He also recently worked as Director of Arts at Arts Council England.

From floating hot air balloons over Moseley at dawn, letting a man live as a bird on the side of the Rotunda to bringing an 8 hour epic production of the Great Gatsby to the West End or producing Elizabeth Streb’s extraordinary aerial works off the landmarks of London just before the London Olympics, Mark will be sharing his story and his insights into ambition, thinking big and making the impossible happen. In particular he will show how all of this by putting the audience at the heart of his work.
